Diaper Products I Bought and Actually Used (and What I Regret Buying)

There are so many diaper products marketed as necessities when in reality they are not! Avoid overspending and stick to what's actually useful. Here is a list of diaper products that I purchased and what I actually used. Also, to note, I do use disposable diapers. If you use reuseable, your list might look slightly different.

Must-Haves I Use Every Day

1. Diapers

  • Brand - I personally don't have a brand preference. We have used many brands (Luvs, Pampers, Huggies, Walmart brand, Target brand, and others) and we have not experienced any leaks or anything. For cost, I would definitely go with the Walmart brand. They are inexpensive in comparison and for us, they worked just as well as any of the other brands.
  • Sizes - From experience, your baby will likely be in size 2 diapers for the longest period. You don't want to go overboard buying a bunch of newborns and size 1 diapers because your baby may outgrow them quickly.

2. Wipes

  • Brand - Wipes are a little different than diapers when comparing brands. Some brands of wipes don't seem to hold as much moisture as others. No one wants to wipe their baby's bottom with a dry wipe! For that reason, I will have to say that even though they are usually more expensive, Pampers has the best wipes. Huggies and Luvs wipes seem to dry out quicker.

3. Diaper Rash Creams

  • Brand - Our favorite diaper rash cream is the Desitin Maximum Strength. Without fail, it has cleared up all diaper rashes! This is recommended every time by our pediatrician, and for good reason!

Game-Changers I Didn't Know I'd Love

1. Diaper Caddy

  • I cannot stress enough how having a diaper caddy makes my life so much easier. When it's the middle of the night, I don't have to fumble around looking for everything. It's all right there in one designated place. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, a plastic caddy from the Dollar Tree works just fine!

2. Diaper Cream Spatula

  • I know this sounds dramatic, but this did in fact change our life. We didn't even know this existed with our first child. We received it as a baby shower gift with our second and it made our life so much easier! No more having to wash your hands after applying diaper rash cream.

3.  Wipe Warmer

  • This one isn't really a necessity, but I know my baby appreciated it on those early, cold mornings! Imagine how you would feel when it's already cold and someone puts a cold wipe on you 🙃.

What I Bought and Didn't Use

1. Diaper Trash Can

  • I used this for a few weeks (using the refills that came with it) and I haven't touched it since. The refills are just too expensive in my opinion and not worth it. In reality, we change our kitchen trash daily, so the diapers don't sit there long enough to smell.

2. Too Many Newborn Diapers

  • As I said earlier, your baby will grow out of these quickly! I definitely overestimated how many of these we would need.

3. Changing Pad

  • I can honestly say that we have not once used the changing pad. It seemed like a good idea and a necessity at the time, but we have always just changed baby on our bed, the couch, really wherever we are at the time.

Final Thoughts

Having a new baby can be overwhelming, especially with everything you need to buy. Walking down the baby aisle, you see so many products that seem like necessities. Just get your main items first and you may find you don't need all that extra stuff. On the flip side of that, you may decide you need that diaper trash can system or that changing pad. Every family is different and has different needs, but this is what worked for us. I hope this list helped give you a better idea on what you need and what you can skip out on. If you have a favorite diaper product not listed, leave it down below for other moms to try out!
