What Makes a Course Worth it?

- Can be used to generate income upon completion
- Online and in-person options
Top Courses I Would Recommend
1. Medical Billing and Coding
This is a growing field and is considered to be in high demand. It usually takes between 3-6 months to complete. Upon completion of the course, you will be able to sit for the exam. There are other certifications you can obtain to better your job prospects in the field. The course through AAPC can be a little expensive so you may want to check at your local community college. This one is a great option if you are looking for something with work from home opportunities.
2. Insurance Adjuster License
The requirements to become an insurance adjuster will vary by state. Some states require licensing and some don't. If you are in a licensing state, you will need to take a pre-licensing course at your local community college (usually a few weeks). Then you will be able to take the licensing exam and apply for your license once you pass the exam.
This option can be a little costly due to exam fees, registration fees, licensing fees, and processing fees. However, once you have your insurance adjuster license, it will be easier for you to obtain an insurance adjuster job! These jobs typically pay well and some offer work from home opportunities.
3. Notary
To become a Notary Public, you will need to complete a Notary Public course at your local community college. These courses are usually completed in one day. Then you will need to pass your state exam and fill out an official Notary Public application. Once all that is complete, you will take your Oath of Office and obtain your Notary seal. There is also an option to become an option to obtain your Electronic Notary (E-Notary) certification.
Becoming a notary is not going to make you a millionaire, but it can earn you some extra income. In my state, the limit you can charge for notary services is $10.00 per notarized signature. Some services have separate negotiated fees and you can also charge by mile if you have to travel. This can be a good way to earn extra money on the side.
4. Payroll Accounting
Payroll Accounting certificate programs usually consist of 3-5 classes. The course I took included 4 courses and I was able to complete it in one semester because I had previously taken one of the classes. This can be great to have if you are looking for a part-time job and even a full-time job. Some job titles to be on the lookout for: Bookkeeper, Payroll Clerk, Accounting Clerk, Tax Preparer. This option also comes with work-from-home opportunities!
5. Social Media Management
Social media management is definitely a growing field. If you have a creative side and an eye for detail, this may be a good fit for you! There are many online courses you can take. I personally did the Meta Social Media course on Coursera. I believe it helped me land a job on Upwork. It helps you become more marketable and increases your chances of landing a social media management job. The best part is most of these jobs are remote and most are part-time if you already have a busy schedule!
*Bonus, the course was free because I completed it during a free trial on Coursera*
Final Thoughts
There are so many quick, affordable courses you can take to help you earn an extra income or help you land a new job! If you aren't sure if you would like something, there are a lot of free courses you can take online to try it out. Small investments in your learning can lead to a bigger income, you don't have to spend a lot of money!
